A Survivor Marks 25 Years

Becky Car for Kits to Heart

By Becky Carr

This March marks 25 years since I was diagnosed with breast cancer. To be able to make that statement seemed a nearly impossible dream back when I was undergoing tests, mastectomy, reconstructive surgeries, and chemotherapy. I was just 38 years old, a mother to three elementary school-aged children, wondering what the future held for our family. I am incredibly grateful for the excellent medical care that returned me to good health and allowed me to reach this milestone.

Equally important to my recovery were my family and friends who provided comfort, support, and prayers. It was so uplifting to know that people cared about me by providing meals, childcare, and other help. I’ll never forget the compassionate teachers who came to our home and planted spring flowers to cheer us all. So, too, will recipients of a Kits to Heart cancer care kit appreciate the kindness and generosity of others.

In these 25 years, I’ve been blessed to see my children grow up, graduate from high school and college, get married, and start families of their own. I was able to resume my engineering career working on many challenging projects. I recently retired and thoroughly enjoy having time to quilt, read, hike, and play with my six grandchildren.

In honor of this 25th anniversary, I am pleased to donate a handmade quilt to the Kits to Heart organization for its fundraising efforts. The contemporary quilt, aptly named Between Friends, is lap size (57” x 71”). It features pink, white, and navy fabrics with rose-gold accents, a fitting tribute to breast cancer awareness.
